New Publication: The Tax Advantage of Big Business

My latest co-authored article with Joseph Baines, “The Tax Advantage of Big Business: How the Structure of Taxation Fuels Concentration and Inequality,” was recently published in Politics & Society.

In the article, we show that the top 10% of listed US non-financial corporations have enjoyed a striking and persistent tax advantage in recent decades. Furthermore, as the effective tax rate of large corporations decreases relative to smaller corporations, their relative investment decreases and their relative payouts to shareholders increase. Based on these findings, we argue that the system of corporate taxation not only fuels corporate concentration, but also widening household inequality.

A pre-print version of the article can be found here. A short synopsis of the article’s main findings and their implications for our understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic was published in The Conversation.
